What does???

Q. What does a caterpillar
do on New Year's Day?
A. Turns over a new leaf.

Love Your Brother

If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his
brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does
not love his brother, whom he has seen,
cannot love God, Whom he has not

seen. And He has given us this command:
Whoever loves God must also love his brother."

--1 John 4:20-21

The Power of Legacy

Timothy was a young pastor in the ancient world. He had a personal
relationship with one of the great celebrities of the church, Paul the
Apostle, and gave us the opportunity to listen in on Paul's admonition
and
encouragement to him.

Paul tells him in the second letter. "As I remember your tears, I long to
see you, that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere
faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother
Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. For this reason I
remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the
laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power
and love and self-control" (2 Tim 1:4-7).

At this time of year, when families gather round, it is important for us
to reflect on those who have gone before us as examples of Jesus Christ.
Even if we do not have a family who follows Christ, we do have those who
come to mind that walked in his steps.

One who comes to my mind this Christmas season is my mother who departed
the planet a little over a year ago. A personal irony of the verse above
is that her name was Lois. It is at the family gatherings that she is
missed the most. Her contributions to conversation, her stories, her
generosity, her understanding, concern, warmth, and laughter, and her
energetic, positive attitude made Christmas mean something more for me.
Though the loss tugs at the tears in those moments of remembrance, there
is something else that also tugs at the heart to carry on.

In a recent memorial service for a respected woman at my church, we were
told of "the power of L." First, was "the power of the Lord" to meet us
in our needs. Second was "the power of Love," not only from God, but from
a worshipping community. These were needed statements to meet the family
and those of us who miss her. Yet, again, something tugged at my heart
that moved my mind: "The power of Legacy."

Paul understood this, which is why he penned it in an inspired letter to
Timothy. Remember, what your mother and grandmother stood for.
Remember
where they fixed their heart. Remember their sensitivity to spiritual
things. Some of the things you appreciated about them most did not
originate from them. They originated in God who gives the Holy Spirit
freely to whose that will trust Him.

This power of legacy that originates in God and is played out in the hands
and feet of His people encourage me. I may be separated from my mother for
the duration of my earthy sojourn, but my confidence lies in carrying her
legacy, which was empowered by the Holy Spirit.

As you turn your attention from the Christmas season to thoughts of the
new year, reflect again on the Christ who came. It was for forgiveness,
but also for holiness. It was for friendship, but also for
apprenticeship. It was for love, but also for legacy. Our Lord of Glory
has come to make disciples and leave us a legacy so that we may walk in
his steps. Dale Fincher

Your Defiant Comeback

Listen to the audio broadcast!
http://xrl.us/ejq4

It was the final event of the men's gymnastics competition
in the 2004 Athens Olympics. American Paul Hamm's hopes
for the gold medal seemed to come crashing down as he
made a lopsided landing and actually toppled into the
judges' tables. That gave him a disappointing 9.137 score
that virtually doomed his chances for a first place finish.
After some moments of what he described as "depression,"
he decided to fight back - with what would have to be the
best two performances of his life, just to win the bronze.
Paul took a deep breath and he began to move powerfully
through the air with a routine that was filled with technical
challenges. It was a nearly perfect performance with a solid
landing at the end. His score: 9.837. At first, he didn't know
what that meant in terms of a medal. Then he heard his coach
screaming, "Olympic champion!" The gold medal was his.

Paul Hamm messed up, but he didn't give up. He fell down,
but he didn't stay down. Maybe that's a picture of you, or it's
going to be a picture of you. Because you've messed up. You've
made some mistakes. That failure could be final - if you let it be.
Or you can get up and make a defiant comeback. Which is
exactly what the devil is counting on you not doing. He got
you down, and he's hoping you'll be so discouraged, so
defeated, that you'll stay down. This is your day to say,
"No way, Satan! I belong to Jesus, and in His strength,
I'm coming back!"

That kind of comeback defiance is powerfully expressed
in our word for today from the Word of God in Micah 7,
beginning with verse 8. "Do not gloat over me, my enemy!
Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness,
the Lord will be my light." Getting up again, coming back
is a choice - one you need to make this very day. Serve
notice that the devil's victory is a temporary victory.
You're not staying down.

Micah goes on to say, "Because I have sinned against
him, I will bear the Lord's wrath, until he pleads my case
and establishes my right." You can't recover unless you
repent. The comeback trail begins at the cross of Jesus
where you acknowledge your sin and remember that it
took the death of God's Son to pay for it. How will He
respond? Hebrews 7:25 says, "He is able to save com-
pletely those who come to God through Him, because
He always lives to intercede for them." He pleads your
case, and your sin is erased from God's Book. After a
horrendous sin of immorality, here was David's turning
point: "I said, 'I will confess my transgressions to the
Lord - and You forgave me the guilt of my sin.'"

Out of the darkness. Back it into the light. Micah's
announcement of a spiritual comeback continues:
"He will bring me out into the light; I will see His
righteousness. Then my enemy will see it and will
be covered with shame." The devil's been trying to
bury you in shame. You need to get up; remove
whatever junk might bring you down again, and
then declare, "Lord, I am going to make the devil
sorry he ever messed with me. I'm going to push
back the darkness and I'm taking prisoners away
from him! He's going to be the one covered with
shame!"

You can be walking, talking proof of the grace,
the love, and the restoring power of Jesus Christ;
turning your fall into a mighty testimony for Jesus
Christ. The voice that's telling you, "It's over. What's
the use? God doesn't love you after what you've
done." That's the voice of hell, and those are lies!
The truth is that "where sin increased, grace increased
all the more" (Romans 5:20). And because of God's
amazing grace, your fall does not have to be final.
You went down, but you're not staying down.
You're coming back more of a winner, and more
of a warrior than ever before! http://www.gospelcom.net/rhm/

Tsunami must be fault of the US

Even as we seek to apportion blame when catastrophe
strikes, we are gripped too by a kind of fatalism. We
stand in awe of nature and feel helpless before its
apparently insuperable power. The rising death toll
in Southeast Asia seems to mock our pretensions
to progress. We may have been to the moon,
eradicated smallpox and created eBay, we think,
but when the tectonic plates move we are no more
secure than were the barefoot citizens of Pompeii.

Where Are You?

Albert Einstein once said, "I want to know [God's] thoughts; the rest
are
details." His words declare a lofty feat, possibly in earnestness,
possibly in arrogance. Yet, it is a quote that can set us thinking.

It seems humanity's search for God is often largely about humanity-
what we
want, what we need, what we feel we deserve, what we think
God must be
like. And we are often quite proud of ourselves for
searching, for having
an inquisitive personality, and an openness
to spirituality. But if the
one we search for is the sovereign God,
isn't this line of thought
somewhat ridiculous? We've never been out
of his reach, out of his sight.

I have often wondered how much of our searching is more or less
insignificant details. While we're disagreeing about the kind of God we
want to find, we've already been found. In our quest for God, even as we
credit ourselves for exploring, how much is more accurately God's
searching for us? Why is there so little talk of God's search for
humanity, God's quest for you?

The Scriptures tell us that from the very beginning of time God has
pursued the human heart, calling out, "Where are you?" when we have
strayed, "What do you want?" as we stand before Him, and "Whom are you
looking for?" even as we search. In fact, "Where are you?" is the first
question recorded in Scripture. (See Genesis 3:9.) Sensing God's presence
after eating what was forbidden, Adam and Eve hid among the trees. And
God
asked Adam, "Where are you?"

But if the God we seek and hide from is the one whose breath brought dust
to life, it was not for God's sake that He posed the question. You and I
needed to be asked.

One of my favorite scenes in all of literature is in The Last Battle of
C.S. Lewis's Narnian tales. Though many had never seen him, faith in
Aslan was common in Narnia, whereas, men of other lands followed Tash.
But growing tired of contradicting claims and hypocritical followers, the
dwarfs decide to declare defiantly, "The dwarfs are for the dwarfs,"
rejecting belief in anything but themselves, refusing to answer to anyone,
renouncing everything they can't see. Later, the Last Battle is over.
Aslan has won. The scene has transformed from a dirty stable into the
beautiful Narnia. Yet curiously, the dwarfs sit hunched as if they are
still in the stable. When asked to stand up and admire the sun and the
sky, scenes greener and truer than anyone had ever seen, a dwarf replies,
"How in the name of all humbug can I see what ain't there?"(1)

I have often wondered if it was this Narnian scene Lewis had in mind when
he said, "I believe in Christianity as I believe the sun has risen, not
only because I see it but because, by it, I see everything else."(2)

To cut ourselves off from God's Word is to blind ourselves from life
itself. The intensity of God's search for humanity and his desire for us
to see clearly are illumined in the questions He puts before us. "Where
are you?" asks the Lord. "Who do you say that I am?" asks Christ. His
questions penetrate all of our hiding spots and pierce the self-deception
that blinds us from seeing God and ourselves in the light of truth. "Do
you love me?" he asks. "Do you want to be made well?"

If today, you stood up, wherever you are, in your place in life, where are
you? Are you hiding? Running? Are you blinded to the truth because it is
not the truth you want to see? Or maybe the words of the hymnist ring true
for your life:

Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wand'ring from the fold of God;
He to rescue me from danger,
Brought me to his precious blood.(3)

There is a point in God's search where the next move depends on your
answer. This new year, let us wholly recognize that his questions elicit
a response. Where are you?

Going Around In Circles

Tidal Wave
Underwater Survivors

The deadly tidal wave was the first in recorded history
to have hit several countries at the same time.

Wachs, 34, and Kim said they were diving around a
wrecked ship on Sunday morning when the water
suddenly churned up around them, creating a "white
wash" that sucked them downwards towards the seabed.

"I was being tossed around like I was inside a washing
machine," said Wachs' husband, Kim, adding that he
had thought he was headed for the surface, but his
depth gauge indicated he was going downwards.

"So I was being sucked under, not knowing what
was happening," he said. Kim eventually saw
sunlight and made his way towards the surface.

Shocked but unharmed, Wachs was meanwhile
surfacing slowly with the help of a divemaster,
not realizing that she and Kim had just survived
one of the worst natural disasters in modern history.

The End Of Illusions

In his new book, THE END OF ILLUSIONS, Joe Loconte
explains that in the thirties, more than two hundred peace
groups, deeply influenced by liberal theology, resisted
giving military aid to those being destroyed by Hitler.
Instead of demonizing Hitler, they said we should address
the "root causes" of Nazi aggression. The Treaty of
Versailles, they claimed, made Hitler "almost inevitable."
In other words, Hitler's bad behavior was our fault.

Great Literature

Great literature isn't political propaganda; its complexity
and insights draw people of all religious and political
stripes. The passage from THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV --
a parable about Christ's return -- is a perfect example.
Both Christians and non-Christians have found unfor-
gettable truths in this story. But Dostoevsky was a
believing Christian who wrote powerful Christian themes,
and he would have been startled today to see how much
they are being enjoyed by modern secular
liberals.

"If there is anything in my thought or style
to commend , the credit is due my parents
for instilling in me an early love of the

taught in the Bible, our country will go

a catastrophe may overwhelm us and
bury all our glory in profound obscurity."

New Stockings

I heard my wife mention one morning while getting ready
for Church, "I sure need some new stockings." When she
went into the bakery on the way home that afternoon, I
spied a clothing store next door. So, I thought I would
surprise her and went in to buy her some new stockings...

"Can I help you," the saleslady asked.
"Yes," I replied. "I would like to get some stockings for
my wife please."
"Scheer?" she asked.
"No, she ain't here," I replied. "She's next door at the bakery."

Binoculars

Listen to the audio broadcast!
http://xrl.us/eiir

Usually a total eclipse of the moon seems to happen when I'm counting sheep,
in the middle of the night. But this one started about 9:00 at night, and
this one I got a chance to see. It's a pretty amazing sight to watch that
shadow slowly move across the moon until it eventually covers it completely.
I said to the friend who was assisting us with ministry that weekend, "I
just wish we had binoculars." "Me, too," he said. Then it dawned on him,
"Hey, I do have binoculars in my truck!" All of a sudden we moved from seats
near the back to something like front row seats on the eclipse. Those
binoculars revealed the craters and the fascinating details of that
disappearing moon. What a difference it made to see it up close!

Whether it's watching the heavens or watching some faraway wildlife right
here on earth, binoculars really do make a difference. They make it big by
bringing it close. Which is exactly what you're supposed to be doing with
the God you belong to - making Him big to the people around you by bringing
Him close. I guess that would make you binoculars for God.

The famed Westminster Catechism of the Christian faith opens with this
powerful summary of why we're all here: "The chief end of man is to glorify
God." That's really clear in our word for today from the Word of God in
Ephesians 1, beginning with verses 5 and 6. Like the Hubble Telescope, this
passage shows us things about our spiritual universe that we could never see
without it. Like the purpose of our lives, for example.

The Bible says: "He predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus
Christ in accordance with his pleasure and will - to the praise of his
glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves." Before
there was a world, before there was a you, God had a plan for you to rescue
you through His Son - so you could live for "the praise of His glorious
grace." Verses 11 and 12 talk about His plan - "the plan of Him who works
out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will..." And what is
His purpose that guides His plan? "...that we might be for the praise of His
glory." Later, it says He bought us with blood to be His for this ultimate
outcome: "To the praise of His glory."

God believes in what management consultants call MBO - Management By
Objective. Since before there was a world, right up to you and me and this
day and right on through to eternity, God's running His plan by one
objective - "the praise of His glory." Since God is the source of everything
that exists, our life makes sense and makes a difference when we bring
people back to that source. What does it mean to "glorify God?" Think
binoculars. It's making Him look as big as He really is to the people we
meet.

They have no idea what an awesome, loving, totally powerful Father He is.
We're to live in such a way that we draw attention to the greatness of our
Father. And how do we do that? By living in such a way that we bring Him
close to people who otherwise might never see Him or touch Him.

Jesus said we were to be a light shining so "people will see your good works
and glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). So here's one good way to
see if you're carrying out the purpose you were created for - when people
are around you, do they end up impressed with your God? If not, you must be
filling their view with you - how great you are, or how many problems you
have, how stressed you are, or just the trivia of your life. They may know
you as a happy person, a caring person, a strong person - but have you ever
told them it's because of what Jesus has done for you? Have you ever prayed
with them when they share a need with you so they can taste that
relationship with a miracle-working God? Do you ask in every situation,
"Lord, how can you use this to draw people to you?"

That's the mind and heart of someone who knows why they're here - who
realizes their greatest significance is in turning people to the greatest
person there is. God's looking for some human binoculars - like you - that
will bring Him close so they can see how very big and how very close He
really is. Ron Hutchcraft

Verse of the Day

* * * Four important things to KNOW: #1) For ALL (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) have sinned & fall short of the glory of God. #2) For the wages of above (see #1) are DEATH (Hell, eternal separation from God, & damnation) but the Gift (free & at no charge to you) of God (Creator, Jehovah, & Trinity) is Eternal Life (Heaven) through (in union with) Jesus Christ (God, Lord, 2nd Person of The Trinity, Messiah, Prince of Peace & Savior of the World). #3) For God so greatly loved & dearly prized the world (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) that He even gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, that whosoever (anyone, anywhere, anytime - while still living) believes (trust in, relies on, clings to, depends completely on) Him shall have eternal (everlasting) life (heaven). #4) Jesus said: "I am THE WAY, THE TRUTH, & THE LIFE. No one (male/female - American, Muslim, Jew, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, Asian, Presbyterian, European, Baptist, Brazilian, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc. ) comes (arrives) to the Father (with GOD in Heaven) EXCEPT BY (through) ME (no other name). *** This wonderful loving GOD gives you the choice - - - (Rev. 3:20) {Please note that church membership, baptism, doing good things, etc. are not requirements for becoming a Christian - however they are great afterwards!!!} *** Jesus said, "Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction (Hell, damnation, eternal punishment), and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life (Heaven, eternal happiness, forever with God), and only a few find it.

D I S C L A I M E R If someone should ask if it's legal to download songs
found on various non-commercial sites, such as this one.

Well, I'm neither a lawyer nor a technician,
and I've begun to wonder if it was legal for
us to tape music off the radio back when
tape recorders first came into being.

And were we committing a crime when we recorded
a movie shown on TV with our VCRs? And was it
really legal to buy a dual-deck recorder for the
express purpose of duplicating cassettes?

My answer to all of the above is, "I don't know."

Nonetheless, here is a formal statement in
some kind of legalize that appears to apply
to this kind of file availability:
