Taking Another Look At Narnia's Creator

With the release of the blockbuster film THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE,
C. S. Lewis is once again drawing the world's attention. Of course, among
Christians, Lewis's stock has never gone down. For at least half a century,
his
works have been inspiring the faithful and drawing the skeptical to
Christianity. As I have recounted many times, his book MERE CHRISTIANITY
was
instrumental in my own conversion.

Even many secularists have recognized the quality of Lewis's work in such books
as the CHRONICLES OF NARNIA and THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS. All the
same, not many
consider him one of our culture's major writers. But now that Lewis
has come
back into the limelight, people are taking a fresh look at the quiet-living
Oxford professor and writer, trying to figure out just what Christians find so
attractive about him.

Aslan Is On The Move

The long awaited release of The Chronicles of Narnia:
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, comes today,
and the movie is likely to become a blockbuster.
Opening on three thousand screens nationwide,
the Narnia film is the product of a collaboration
between Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media.
Fans of C. S. Lewis and his most famous literary work,
the seven-volume series known as The Chronicles of
Narnia, have waited for the film version of this work
for a very long time. Indeed, the first volume of Lewis'
great fantasy work was released over a half century
before the story hit the big screen.

Living With Christmas

I sometimes wonder if Christmas, to an outsider looking in, seems
to be
something we are having a hard time living with. I have almost
heard as
many arguments about Christmas this year as I have heard
Christmas songs.
The debates are diverse and many of them heated;
some with good reason.
There are voices on every side of every soap
box involving decorations
before Thanksgiving, the constant beckoning
of consumerism, the exchange
of "holiday" greetings instead of
"Christmas" wishes, the sounds of the
Salvation Army bell ringers,
and the growing trend of upside-down
Christmas trees. Everyone
seems to have a platform and no one seems to be
happy.

Proud and pleased as she could be, the new, young bride,
and a recent graduate of UNC, Mrs. Stanford Strothers,
strode briskly up to the teller's cage at the bank to cash
her husband's pay check for the first time.

When the teller told her the check would have to be endorsed,
the bride grabbed the pen and unhesitatingly wrote on the
back, "I heartily recommend my husband, Stanford Strothers."

Merry Christmas
From Howdy

Christmas break was over and the UNC English professor was
asking the class about their vacations...

He turned to a Sophomore and asked what she did over Christmas.

"We visited my aunt in Minneapolis, Minnesota," she said.

"What an excellent pair of spelling words," the prof said,
"Can you tell the class how you spell that?"

The Sophomore thought about it and said, "Ya know, we
really
went to Ohio."

People you do not want to hear say "OOPS!"

Your dentist.
Your nurse.
Your hairdresser.
Your mechanic.
Your gardener.
Your tax accountant.
The computer tech person.
The house painter.
The pilot.
The crew installing your roof, siding, sprinkler system . . .

At the end of the semester, UNC's star football player
celebrated the relaxation of team curfew by attending
a late night campus party.

Soon after arriving, he became captivated by a beautiful
young thing and eased into a conversation with her by
asking if she met many dates at parties.

"Oh, I have a 3.9, so I'm much more attracted to the
strong academic types than to dumb party animals," she
said. "What's your G.P.A.?"

Grinning from ear to ear, the football player boasted,
"I get about 27 in the city and 38 on the highway."

a sign on a plot

lists a phone number and in big bold
letters the words
"WILL DIVIDE". The man has been considering buying
a
bit of land for investment purposes. He calls the number

After his 1931 conversion to Christianity following a famous
nighttime walk with fellow fantasy writer and Oxford don
J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis went on to write some of the most
famous 20th century Christian books, including "The Screw -
tape Letters" & "The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe."

Beyond the fictional creations of Santa, Rudolph, and The Grinch Who
Stole Christmas, we find the historical reality of the birth of Jesus. In real
time and place, his presence made such an impact that today we date our
calendars "2000 A.D." The significance for you today?

Why it is that the whole world celebrates the birth of Jesus? This little
baby, born to a carpenter's family in the obscure town of Bethlehem in the
Middle East, has a following today far beyond the borders of the U.S. The
largest Christian church in the world is in South Korea. Why is He so special?

Well, Jesus said He was God. If you look at Buddha or Mohammed or the
Dalai
Lama, they identified themselves as prophets or spiritual guides. In
contrast, Jesus clearly and repetitively told people He was God. A pretty
lofty statement.

Jesus claimed he could give people eternal life and forgiveness
for their
sins...abilities that clearly belong only to God.

His communication was also unique. Jesus didn't teach people ten steps to
achieve holiness, or personal disciplines to reach God. If you want to know
God, Jesus said "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to
the Father but by Me." He asked people to focus on Himself with statements
like, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me will not walk in
darkness, but will have the light of life."

A lot of people are comfortable giving Jesus the status of an inspired
teacher, maybe even a prophet. But what if this Jesus whose birth we
celebrate is really the Messiah? What if He is God in human form whom
so many of the Old Testament prophets wrote about?

The prophet Micah said the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. David said
He would be one of His own ancestors. Isaiah said He would minister in Galilee

and die by torture. And on and on, well over 100 specific prophesies to help
people identify the coming Messiah. Jesus fulfilled every one of them. The
chance of any person fulfilling even eight of these prophecies is one in
100,000,000,000,000,000.

The prophet Joel spoke of a day when the sun would be turned to darkness,

and the moon to blood. This picture--besides giving us a glimpse of that
terrible, coming Day of the Lord in judgment--is also a graphic picture of
our own times. Even today, in the gathering clouds of our culture, we see
darkness at noon.

One of the central realities of this darkness is the dawning of a
post-Christian culture -- and a central reality of our emerging culture is
the closing of the postmodern mind. Something is happening to the worldview,
the mentality, and the consciousness of this age. If we listen closely, we
can hear something like the closing of a steel door -- a solemn, cataclysmic
slamming of a door. We have been watching the postmodern mind in its
development, and it is now well developed. Not only do we see the themes
of
postmodernity taking hold of the larger culture, but we understand the
challenge this pattern of thinking poses to Christian truth and Christian
truth-telling. Tolerance is perverted into a radical secularism that is
anything but tolerant. There is little openness to truth, and growing
hostility to truth claims. Indeed, the postmodern mind has a fanatical, if
selective, dedication to moral relativism, and an understanding that truth
has no objective or absolute basis whatsoever.

Rembering Pearl Harbor

"Pearl Harbor - December 7, 1941" -- an event which inspired a united nation
to adopt a new slogan, "Remember Pearl Harbor," just as the nation adopted
a similar slogan 105 years earlier in the year 1836: "Remember the Alamo."
On that day, March 6, 1836, 2000 Mexican soldiers attacked the Alamo,
defended by 189 American men. The result, at the end of that day, was
recorded as 1600 Mexicans, and 189 Americans killed in action.

The recorded results of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor at the end
of the day, December 7, 1941, included 5 of America's 8 battleships moored
there destroyed, with the other 3 seriously damaged, other ships and the
Hawaii based air force planes were also destroyed, and the number of
American deaths exceeded 2,400.

Assuming that a person should have been at least 12 years old on that date
in order to appreciate to the full what had happened, only those who are past
75 years of age today can really remember the attack on Pearl Harbor. Todays
news commentators, the "talking heads" on TV -- most of them, at least -- can
evaluate that event only by the reports they have read or the films they have
seen. They have no idea whatsoever of how the American people felt and reacted
to Roosevelt's defined "day of infamy."

A UNC grad came home from her first day commuting into the city.
Her mother noticed she was looking a little peaked and
asked, "Honey, are you feeling all right?"

"Not really," the UNC grad replied. "I'm nauseous from sitting
backward on the train."

"Poor dear," Mom said. "Why didn't you ask the person sitting
across from you to switch seats for a while?"

"I couldn't," replied the UNC grad, "there was no one there."

The sign in a Norwegian lounge reads:

"Ladies are requested not to have
children in the bar."

Tacked on the door of a Moscow hotel room:
"If this is your first visit to the U.S.S.R., you

An airline ticket office in Copenhagen
reminds you: "We take your bags and
send them in all directions."

In a certain African hotel you may choose
between: "A room with a view on the sea

A sign on a clothing store in Brussels read:
"Come inside and have a fit."

This notice was posted on a Rumanian

The room service in a Lisbon hotel tells you:
"If you wish for breakfast, lift the telephone
and ask for room service. This will be
enough for you to bring your food up."

Verse of the Day

* * * Four important things to KNOW: #1) For ALL (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) have sinned & fall short of the glory of God. #2) For the wages of above (see #1) are DEATH (Hell, eternal separation from God, & damnation) but the Gift (free & at no charge to you) of God (Creator, Jehovah, & Trinity) is Eternal Life (Heaven) through (in union with) Jesus Christ (God, Lord, 2nd Person of The Trinity, Messiah, Prince of Peace & Savior of the World). #3) For God so greatly loved & dearly prized the world (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) that He even gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, that whosoever (anyone, anywhere, anytime - while still living) believes (trust in, relies on, clings to, depends completely on) Him shall have eternal (everlasting) life (heaven). #4) Jesus said: "I am THE WAY, THE TRUTH, & THE LIFE. No one (male/female - American, Muslim, Jew, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, Asian, Presbyterian, European, Baptist, Brazilian, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc. ) comes (arrives) to the Father (with GOD in Heaven) EXCEPT BY (through) ME (no other name). *** This wonderful loving GOD gives you the choice - - - (Rev. 3:20) {Please note that church membership, baptism, doing good things, etc. are not requirements for becoming a Christian - however they are great afterwards!!!} *** Jesus said, "Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction (Hell, damnation, eternal punishment), and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life (Heaven, eternal happiness, forever with God), and only a few find it.

D I S C L A I M E R If someone should ask if it's legal to download songs
found on various non-commercial sites, such as this one.

Well, I'm neither a lawyer nor a technician,
and I've begun to wonder if it was legal for
us to tape music off the radio back when
tape recorders first came into being.

And were we committing a crime when we recorded
a movie shown on TV with our VCRs? And was it
really legal to buy a dual-deck recorder for the
express purpose of duplicating cassettes?

My answer to all of the above is, "I don't know."

Nonetheless, here is a formal statement in
some kind of legalize that appears to apply
to this kind of file availability:
