Oscar Cullmann, a German New Testament scholar, wrote a book titled Christ and Time, where he makes an insightful analogy. In every war, he explains, there is a decisive battle that takes place, after which the outcome of the war is determined. In World War II it was D-Day, because after that momentous day the world knew how the war would end. Even so, more people died after D-Day than before it. In fact, the darkest days of World War II were seen after that decisive battle.
