The Rocks Cry Out : Archeology & The Historical Jesus
by Charles Colson

For the past decade, public discussion on the
historical Jesus has centered on the work of a group
of scholars who call themselves "The Jesus Seminar."

This self-anointed group has it, as their mission,
"to wrestle the popular perception of Jesus from
fundamentalists who control the religious airwaves .
. ." Their problem is that the evidence is lining up
in favor of those the Seminar dismisses as "fundamentalists."

Participants in the Seminar, like John Dominic
Crossan, who teaches at De Paul University, believe
that the Gospels are propaganda written by men who
never knew Jesus. As such, their works cannot be
relied upon as history.

Crossan argues that when the Gospels describe the
empty tomb of Jesus, they aren't describing an actual
event. So what happened to Jesus' body? Why didn't his
enemies produce it after stories of the resurrection
began to spread?

According to Crossan, wild dogs probably ate it.
Especially since crucified criminals were never
buried in the manner described in the Gospels.
Rather, their bodies were thrown in common grave
where animals could get to them.

At least that's what scholars used to believe. That
is, until archeologists recently discovered the
remains of a crucified man, dating from the time of
Jesus, who had been buried in much the same manner
as the Gospels describe. So much for wild dogs!

This isn't the only instance of the scholars'
theories being overtaken by archeological facts.
Until five years ago, many scholars doubted the
Gospels' accounts of Jesus' trial before the
Sanhedrin. They could find no extra-biblical evidence
that there had ever been a high priest named Caiaphas.

Then, in 1995, workers excavating outside Jerusalem
came across a burial cave. Inside the cave was a
casket marked "Joseph, the son of Caiaphas." And
scholars soon concluded that the Caiaphas in the
inscription was the same one referred to in the Gospels.

Archeological confirmation isn't limited to
historical figures. Scientists have discovered that
the desire of the Gospel writers to spread the good
news about Christ didn't prevent them from accurately
portraying first-century Palestine.

Mendel Nun, an Israeli archeologist, told Biblical
Archeology Review that he is "continually surprised
at how accurately the New Testament writers reflect
natural phenomena [around the Sea of Galilee]."

Even more exciting, excavations have uncovered what
some scholars believe is the home of the Apostle
Peter in Bethsaida--the place that served as
Jesus' headquarters for much of His ministry.
Excavations in and around Bethsaida have confirmed
the portrait of the region presented in the Gospels.

Discoveries like these are a powerful rebuke of those
who, like the Jesus Seminar, maintain that the
Scriptures sacrifice history for the sake of proclamation.
That should not come as a surprise since the Bible
makes specific historical claims about Jesus. For the
Gospel writers, history was an inseparable part of
the Gospel--not something they made up to suit
their purposes.

It's this commitment to history that is being
confirmed by archeologists. So, the next time your
neighbors tell you that the Scriptures aren't
trustworthy, tell them about what archeologists are
discovering: If you really want to know about Jesus
and His world, there's no place like the Bible.

Monday

Live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful
nature.
--Galatians 5:16
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
I want you to think about an orange rhinoceros flying with blue wings. Now
quit, I don't want you to think about it anymore. You know there is no such
thing as an orange rhino that flies, much less one that flies on blue wings.
Oh course the point is simple: the more we try to not do something, the more
we focus on it and ensure we do what we are not supposed to do. That's why
the gift of the Holy Spirit is so important. He enables and empowers us to
move beyond our sin -- not by focusing on it and refusing it, but by
enriching us and "distracting" us with the important things of God.

MY PRAYER...
Abba Father, I thank you so much for your Holy Spirit that lives in me and
is now interceding with you for me. Please fill me with your Spirit so that
my life more nearly reflects your will and focuses on your concerns. Through
Jesus, who poured out your Spirit upon me at my baptism, I pray. Amen.

Tuesday

Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become
blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved
generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out
the word of life.
--Philippians 2:14-16
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
Stars. They've always been a source of constant hope for God's people. "Your
descendants will be like the stars," God told Abraham. "When I see the
stars, what is man that you are mindful of him?" the Psalms ask. The Wisemen
from the East followed a star to Jesus. Luke reminds us that Jesus was a
bright star come to us from heaven to shine God's light to those in
darkness. And now, we're stars. God's points of light in the dark sky of the
universe. So let's make today a day where our light shines God's glory to a
dark world around us.

MY PRAYER...
Almighty God, the incredible expanse of your universe, with its billions of
stars, exceeds my limited comprehension. But I thank you for calling me to
be a light in the dark world around me and I pledge to shine your light
today in the lives of all those I can. Through the name of the Bright and
Morning Star I pray. Amen.

Wednesday

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is
faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when
you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up
under it.
--1 Corinthians 10:13
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
TEMPTATION... We've all been there. Satan's silver bullet designed just for
our heart. "No one will ever know, besides it won't hurt anybody!" some
mysterious voice sounding like our own whispers inside our head. Even if
those two statements were true, and they never really are, it would matter
because something inside of us caved in to what we knew was wrong. One line
of defense is to simply remind ourselves we are not alone in this
temptation -- others have faced it and conquered it, so we can too, by God's
help and the power of his Holy Spirit.

MY PRAYER...
Most Holy Father, guard my heart from temptation and my life from sin. I
want to serve you with wholehearted devotion. Forgive me for my past sin,
and by your grace and through your word, strengthen me with your Holy Spirit
so that I may overcome the temptations that Satan uses to separate me from
you. Through my Protector and Redeemer I pray. Amen.

Thursday

In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this
sums up the Law and the prophets.
--Matthew 7:12
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
The Golden Rule -- golden because it's genuine, lasting, and valuable.
Imagine how different our world would be if we practiced this principle --
not just in our "church life" but in our daily life with our family, with
our coworkers and employer, with the people we manage, with the folks on the
freeway and in the neighborhoods where we drive, toward the waiters and
waitresses who serve us. What a wonderfully different world it would be if
the Golden Rule were to be practiced. I think I'll start changing my world
with it today! How about you?

MY PRAYER...
Generous Father, you have blessed me with so many rich and wonderful gifts.
I can never repay you. One thing I want you to know, dear Father, is that I
especially appreciate the way you have treated me with grace and not with
justice or judgment. Give me the power to do the same with the people my
life touches this week. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Friday

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.
--James 1:2-3
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
"Hang in there!" There are few traits more important than perseverance. Most
important accomplishments in life happen because of perseverance. Most luck
occurs when we've perservered long enough for the "magical moment" to come
along. Edison said it best, life's greatest feats, the world's greatest
discoveries, his own most fantastic inventions were "1% inspiration and 99%
perspiration." "Hang in there!" and see the glory of God come through in
you!

MY PRAYER...
Unchangeable and Unshakeable God, through the friends you have sent into my
life and by the power of your gift, the Holy Spirit, help me to stand up
under trial and prove my character true with perseverance when under fire.
Give my faith courage and endurance so that my life shows forth your
enduring strength. Through him who remained faithul unto death, I pray.
Amen.

Saturday

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one
who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap
destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit will reap eternal life."
--Galatians 6:7-8
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
Isn't it incredible how huge trees grow out of tiny seeds! This principle
runs throughout all of life. We can never completely get away from the seeds
we sow. So let's not fool ourselves while we're trying to do a "snow job" on
God. Let's make sure the seeds we sow are the ones we want sprouting up!

MY PRAYER...
O Eternal God, who lived before time began and who will be the Great I AM
when time is no more, bless the seeds my life sows so they may bear fruit
and bless those I love. Through Jesus, the grain of wheat who died and was
buried so that life may flower forth. Amen.

Sunday

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door
will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds;
and to him who knocks, the door will be opened."
--Matthew 7:7-8
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
Ask! So often we're afraid to ask for help because we have to admit we don't
have the answers. Seek! Effort and interest and perseverance are necessary
and that's sometimes hard. Knock! But God wants us to use the A.S.K.
principle and bring our hearts before him. So let's not whine, complain,
desire, and want. Let's A.S.K. our Father and seek his glory.

MY PRAYER...
Waiting Father, I am sorry that so often you hear only my whines,
complaints, and concerns. You have been so generous with your love. Help me
to keep my heart set on you and your will today as I ask you to minister to
the things on my heart. Through Jesus I pray. Amen.

to read it the more confident will be my hope that they will prove useful
citizens of their country and respectable members of society. I have for
many years made it a practice to read through the Bible once every year."
- President John Quincy Adams

"The existence of the Bible, as a Book for the people, is the greatest

"America was born a Christian nation. America was born
to exemplify that devotion to the elements of righteousness,
which are derived from the revelations of Holy Scriptures.
Part of the destiny of Americans lies in their daily perusal
of this great book of revelations. That if they would see
America free and pure they will make their own spirits
free and pure by this baptism of the Holy Spirit."
--President Woodrow Wilson

For Christians, the life and death of Jesus are the ultimate
expressions of love, and the supreme demonstrations of
God's mercy, faithfulness, and redemption. Since Christ's
miraculous Resurrection on Easter, more than 2,000 years
ago, Christians have expressed joy and gratitude for this
wondrous sacrifice and for God's promise of freedom for
the oppressed, healing for the brokenhearted, and salvation.
--President George W. Bush

"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this
great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians;
not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this
very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum,
prosperity, and freedom of worship here."
--Patrick Henry (original member of the Continental Congress)

Ted Kennedy's Club Discriminated

When Ted Kennedy tried to chastise Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito for his one-time membership in a group opposed to admitting more women and minorities to Princeton, the pot was calling the kettle black.

Sen. Kennedy still belongs to a social club for Harvard students and alumni that was thrown off campus nearly 20 years ago after refusing to allow female members, an investigation by the Washington Times reveals.

The book Ted Kennedy
doesn't want you to read -
Go Here Now.
According to the membership directory of the Owl Club, Kennedy updated his personal information as recently as September 7.

Ironically, the Owl Club, long reviled at Harvard as "sexist," was evicted from the campus in 1984 for violating federal anti-discrimination laws authored by Kennedy.

"It's a social club. It's like a fraternity."

But according to the Times, Harvard views organizations such as the Owl Club quite differently from fraternities and sororities, which are considered a form of housing and therefore are not coeducational.

Kennedy's hypocritical attack on Alito over his membership in CAP would come as no surprise to readers of the blockbuster new book "Do As I Say (Not As I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy" by bestselling author Peter Schweizer.

In his book Schweizer discloses that while Kennedy has fought for the estate tax and spoken out against tax shelters, he has repeatedly benefited from an intricate web of trusts and private foundations that have shielded most of his family's fortune from the IRS.

One Kennedy family trust wasn't even set up in the U.S., but in Fiji.

Schweizer also reveals that while Kennedy has championed the development of alternate energy sources, he opposed a plan to build a wind-power generating facility to provide clean, cheap power to Cape Cod.

The reason: The wind turbines would be positioned off the coast from the Kennedy compound in Hyannis, in one of the family's favorite yachting and sailing areas.

1) Devastating natural disasters foreshadow the coming of Christ.

In the last year, a massive tsunami devastated coastal cities from India to Indonesia. The death toll and devastation were mind-numbing. Then less than a year later, an entire American city, and much of the American Gulf Coast was taken out, or at least rendered uninhabitable for months. The damaging effects of both hurricanes Katrina and Wilma, as well as the devastation wreaked by the earthquake in Pakistan have made 2005 the most destructive year in memory. In Luke 21:10 Jesus speaks of "great earthquakes", as well as "fearful events and great signs from heaven" that will happen before His return. Prophecy experts agree that the accumulation and volume of disasters are definite warning signs. These events are seen as a foreshadowing of the overwhelming chaos that is to transpire during the tribulation, prompting many to repent before it's too late.

2) The Jewish population converges in Israel to rebuild their temple in Jerusalem.

As Israel's Jewish population increases, it is expected to become the largest in the world, surpassing that of the United States. This will be a dynamic benchmark from a biblical perspective, as the number one "super-sign" of the end times is the return of the Jewish people to their homeland from worldwide exile.

Israel has suffered a tumultuous year after withdrawing from a 38-year occupation in Gaza. The international community saw this as a positive step, but it caused unrest among Palestinians and Islamic militants, resulting in protests and air strikes. These continued tensions may make Israel ripe for a covenant with the Antichrist.

Another significant event went largely unnoticed. The ancient Sanhedrin, the official legal tribunal in Israel, convened in October 2004—the first time in 1,600 years. In its February 2005 meeting, it took up the topic of rebuilding the temple. At its June meeting, the Sanhedrin issued an official call to rebuild the temple, an act that God's Word predicts must occur before the return of the Messiah.

3) A union between Europe and Iraq could set the stage for the emergence of the Antichrist.

Over the past two decades, the Middle East has been one of the world's most fierce battlegrounds. But recent activity in Iraq could be moving it closer to a peaceful democracy. The Bible prophesies that the city of Babylon will be rebuilt as headquarters for the antichrist. Babylon lies on the Euphrates River, just 50 miles south of Baghdad.

The possibility of a peaceful Iraq may encourage relations with Europe. As these ties grow deeper, a European leader may use his influence to fashion a wider presence in Babylon. While the situation in Iraq is currently still dangerous and uncertain, two elections have already been successful. Europe may attempt to develop good relations with Iraq because of its prime location in the middle of two-thirds of the world's proven oil reserves. The coalition could lead to the further building of Europe as the new Roman Empire and the eventual emergence of the Antichrist.

4) Islamic extremists lash out with London bombings and France riots.

Extremist Islamic unrest in Europe was at the heart of the London bombing and the riots in France. Both of these events point to the dramatic religious and cultural divide between the east and west. Muslims have been using dramatic tactics to get France to bow to its demands, with much of the tension coming from the difficulty the country has had with integrating its large number of Muslim immigrants into society. Even as Europe extends its reach, it is likely to feel ill-equipped to handle increasing Muslim terror and the possibilities of an oil crisis. This could open the door to the rule of an oligarchy, as prophesied in Daniel 2 and 7. This singular governing body will vehemently work against terror. From an oligarchy, the rule of the Antichrist may not be too far behind.

5) Putin consolidates power in Russia, as the empire rebuilds.

Russia has tried to make drastic reforms, but can't escape her past. President Putin has been moving to consolidate power and neutralize potential opposition. In an apparent power-grab, Putin abolished direct election of the 89 governors of the various regions of Russia. In his annual state of the nation address in April, he mourned the fall of the Soviet Union and raised fears he is reversing democracy.

In addition, this year saw the Russian parliament voting to severely limit the independence of foreign-backed human rights organizations and think tanks in the country. These organizations will be forced to register with the Ministry of Justice, and adhere to state control. These events in Russia are exactly what we should expect to see if we are nearing the end times. If the empire rebuilds and attacks with its Islamic allies, the target will be Israel.

* * * Four important things to KNOW: #1) For ALL (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) have sinned & fall short of the glory of God. #2) For the wages of above (see #1) are DEATH (Hell, eternal separation from God, & damnation) but the Gift (free & at no charge to you) of God (Creator, Jehovah, & Trinity) is Eternal Life (Heaven) through (in union with) Jesus Christ (God, Lord, 2nd Person of The Trinity, Messiah, Prince of Peace & Savior of the World). #3) For God so greatly loved & dearly prized the world (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) that He even gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, that whosoever (anyone, anywhere, anytime - while still living) believes (trust in, relies on, clings to, depends completely on) Him shall have eternal (everlasting) life (heaven). #4) Jesus said: "I am THE WAY, THE TRUTH, & THE LIFE. No one (male/female - American, Muslim, Jew, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, Asian, Presbyterian, European, Baptist, Brazilian, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc. ) comes (arrives) to the Father (with GOD in Heaven) EXCEPT BY (through) ME (no other name). *** This wonderful loving GOD gives you the choice - - - (Rev. 3:20) {Please note that church membership, baptism, doing good things, etc. are not requirements for becoming a Christian - however they are great afterwards!!!} *** Jesus said, "Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction (Hell, damnation, eternal punishment), and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life (Heaven, eternal happiness, forever with God), and only a few find it.

D I S C L A I M E R If someone should ask if it's legal to download songs
found on various non-commercial sites, such as this one.

Well, I'm neither a lawyer nor a technician,
and I've begun to wonder if it was legal for
us to tape music off the radio back when
tape recorders first came into being.

And were we committing a crime when we recorded
a movie shown on TV with our VCRs? And was it
really legal to buy a dual-deck recorder for the
express purpose of duplicating cassettes?

My answer to all of the above is, "I don't know."

Nonetheless, here is a formal statement in
some kind of legalize that appears to apply
to this kind of file availability:
