Comments:
Many people love it when they hear an old song and are instantly taken
back to high school or grade school. It's amazing how songs, TV shows
and movies play such important roles in our lives. As much as critics
denigrate pop culture, it can be a huge force.

If you're a child of the 1960s, '70s or '80s, you'll love today's site.
It has information on all of the songs, TV shows, movies and events
that shaped our lives.

Be warned! It's very easy to spend hours at this site. I found myself
constantly clicking links and screaming, "I remember that!" Of course,
everyone in the building kept running into my office to see if I was
okay. I was--just really excited!

The warden, addressing the three instigators of a failed prison riot,
said,

"I would like to know two things. First: Why did you revolt? And second:
How in tarnation did you get out of your cell?"

One of the three men stepped forward,

"Warden, we rebelled because the food is, to put it simply... awful."

"I see. And... just what did you use to break the bars?" the warden
asked.

Replied the spokesman....

TRIVIA:

The bouillon cube was once a common snack food in early
America. Beef or veal stock was boiled down until it
reached a hard jelly texture. The hard cakes didn't spoil,
and trappers and hunters nibbled on them when tramping
along on long journeys during the 1700s.

Shark

The largest Great White Shark ever caught measured 37 feet
and weighed 24,000 pounds. It was found in a herring weir
in New Brunswick in 1930. The harmless Whale Shark, holds
the title of largest fish, with the record being a 59 footer
captured in Thailand in 1919.

Wood

Pine, spruce, or other evergreen wood should never be used
in barbecues. These woods, when burning or smoking, can add
harmful tar and resins to the food. Only hardwoods should be
used for smoking and grilling, such as oak, pecan, hickory,
maple, cherry, alder, apple, or mesquite, depending on the
type of meat being cooked.

Sandy Koufax

Over a six-year period (1961-1966), baseball legend Sandy
Koufax was the strikeout king four times, the Cy Young

1963. His first name given at birth was Sanford.

The NEW YORK TIMES ushered in the new year with a nice gift for Christians --
one it did not give to anyone else: a slap in the face.

The slap came in the form of a piece written by Thomas Vinciguerra. It was
titled, "The Pre-Blogger: Find Mencken at nature-abhors-a-moron.com." Sixty
years ago, H. L. Mencken was one of America's most acerbic social critics, and
the TIMES was speculating on whether Mencken would have become a blogger.
Vinciguerra then offered entries from a hypothetical Mencken blog -- entries
that were indicative of both the bigotry and ignorance of the NEW YORK TIMES.

One entry read: "Sanity has triumphed in Dover, Pennsylvania, where the boobs
who tried to foist intelligent design on the local lyceums have been soundly
thrashed . . . Would that this victory were permanent. It will take more than
jurisprudence to retire the forces of ignorance. Meanwhile, we can only hope
they engage in less egregious forms of buncombe -- like installing the Ten
Commandments in public squares, or speaking in tongues."

Ha, ha, ha. Very funny.

Of course, Mencken referred to Christians as "rustic ignoramuses" when he wasn't
calling us worse things. But he also had insulting things to say about women,
Blacks, and Jews -- comments that today we recognize as both ignorant and
offensive. To its credit, the TIMES would never dream of trying to be funny by
calling Blacks and women mentally inferior, or by imitating Mencken's viciously
anti-Semitic comments. But when it comes to Christians, all bets are off. And
like any bigot, the newspaper that celebrates itself for politically correct
tolerance and exquisite sensitivity can't seem to recognize its own blind
prejudice.

The TIMES also exposed its ignorance of the kind of people who espouse
intelligent design. Does it realize it is calling Albert Einstein a boob?
Einstein once said: "God does not play dice with the cosmos" -- he found design
in the universe. Scientist Fritz Schaefer -- four times nominated for a Nobel
Prize -- is another "boob" who believes in the intelligent design theory. So
does Professor Michael Behe, the Lehigh biochemist who has proven the
"irreducible complexity" of the human cell structure. And then there is Oxford
Professor Antony Flew, the famous British philosopher. Throughout his long
career, Flew argued that there was a "presumption of atheism" -- that is, the
existence of a creator could not be proved. Intelligent design caused Flew, at
the age of 81, to reverse himself and acknowledge God as creator. Flew is
"ignorant"?

For Christians, being attacked is one of the realities of life. The secular
world, and the NEW YORK TIMES in particular, detest us because we stand for
absolute truth. But our response to attacks like this is to overcome evil with
good. For all of its faults, the TIMES now and then expresses grudging
admiration for the human rights work evangelicals perform in the trenches. We
need to strengthen our witness there and continue defending the truth.

We also ought to keep a sense of humor when we are attacked like this. After
all, Mencken once observed, "All successful newspapers are ceaselessly querulous
and bellicose. They never defend anyone or anything if they can help it; if the
job is forced on them, they tackle it by denouncing someone or something else"
-- not my idea of good sport, but there it is.

Star of Wonder
Betsy Childs

Many of our nativity scenes symbolically show a star hovering a few feet
above a stable. This star, though a recorded part of Jesus' early
narrative, is a great mystery to us. We are told in the second chapter of
Matthew that Magi, that is, pagan astrologers, saw the star and somehow
divined from it that the king of the Jews had been born. Some have
posited that these easterners may have been interpreting prophecies left
over from Daniel's exile in Babylon. However, we really have no
information about how the Magi connected the star with the king of the
Jews, nor how it led them first to Jerusalem, then to Bethlehem. We also
don't know how soon after the birth of Jesus the Magi's journey occurred.

As I have been thinking about this star and its role in the Christmas
story (not to mention its prominent place in several Christmas carols) I
have come to see the star as a reminder that the birth of Christ was the
fulfillment of an ancient plan of God. The reason I see the star as a
reminder of God's plan across the centuries is because science teaches us
that it takes a long time for the light of a star to become visible to us
on earth. I do not put it beyond God's capability to create a star
visible to us overnight, perhaps by increasing the speed of light. But,
in the normal workings of our solar system, it takes years for the light
of a star to reach us. The sun is the closest star to earth, and it takes
only about eight minutes for its light to reach us. Yet the light from the
stars that are farthest from earth but still visible to us takes over 4,000
years to reach us!

The biblical account does not suggest that God created this star at the
time of Jesus' birth and miraculously matured it so that its light would
reach earth in the first century. Hence, it is reasonable to suppose that
the light from the star that the Magi studied had been traveling toward
earth for hundreds, perhaps, thousands of years. In the same way, God's
plan for his promised Messiah had been maturing over centuries until the
time of its fulfillment in Bethlehem. Isaiah's Messianic prophecies are
some of the best known; in Isaiah 7:14 he says, "The virgin will be with
child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." In
Isaiah 9, he also writes, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is
given, and the government will be on his shoulder. And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace"
(Isaiah 9:6).

A few verses before Isaiah speaks of the child to be born, he writes these
words: "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those
living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned" (Isaiah
9:2). Now this is pure imaginative speculation on my part, but I like to
think that the star of Bethlehem began shining when Isaiah uttered these
words (around seven hundred years before the birth of Christ). Those
familiar with biblical prophecy know that future events are often stated
in the present tense because of the certainty of their occurrence once God
has promised them. In this case, however, it is possible that this
prophecy was fulfilled already. It is possible that a light had already
dawned in the form of a star hundreds of light years away!

Jesus' birth, life, death and resurrection were the culmination of a plan
God had been orchestrating since the beginning of history. In the Garden
of Eden, God prophesied that one of Eve's descendants would crush the head
of the serpent. Revelation 13:8 shows us that the scope of God's plan for
Jesus extends even further back in time, referring to him as the "the Lamb
that was slain from the creation of the world." Although for some of the
characters involved (such as Mary, who gave birth to her first child in a
stable far from home) there may have been a temptation to think of the
events of Christ's birth as haphazard, God's will that had long been
decreed was perfectly carried out. On this day which marks Epiphany, when
you see the stars let them be a reminder to you that God, the author of
history, is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His plans cannot be
thwarted.

The One Who Sees
Jill Carattini

Common is the sentiment among recent college graduates, "I went in feeling
like I knew so much, and leave realizing how little I know." I remember
what this felt like, walking down the aisle to accept my diploma,
wondering at the irony. Yet as uncomfortable as that moment of
recognition can be, I am convinced that the thought is an important place
to linger.

Ravi Zacharias tells of being a graduate student when the new encyclopedia
Britannica was released in its fifteenth edition. It was a massive work
that had taken fourteen years to produce, and he was fascinated by the
statistics: two hundred advisors, three hundred editors, four thousand
contributors, over a hundred thousand entries, thirty-four million
dollars, forty-three million words. Even so, in the last pages of that
work, one of the editors had the audacity to conclude, "Herein contains
the entirety of human knowledge."

It strikes me as absolutely fascinating that again and again in the
Scriptures we are confronted with men and women who, having come in
contact God, find themselves blown away by the notion that they didn't
know all that they didn't know. Jacob had a dream in which God appeared
above a great ladder introducing Himself to Jacob as the God of his
ancestors. When Jacob awakes, his first words are filled with
astonishment, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of
it" (Genesis 28:16). Hagar, the maidservant of Sarah, had a similar
reaction after she encountered God in the desert. Having run away from
Sarah, Hagar was resting beside a spring when God spoke to her and told
her to return. Scripture imparts that she was amazed: "And she gave this
name to the LORD who spoke to her: 'You are the God who sees me,' for she
said, 'I have now seen the One who sees me'" (Genesis 16:13).

Christian philosopher Esther Lightcap Meek writes, "We labor under the
misimpression that we see what we see, that seeing is believing, that
either I see it or I don't."(1) Though we may not see God clearly, the
Scriptures reveal that He makes Himself known to us again and again, in
order that we might know Him. This is the God we find throughout the
Scriptures! Whether in Jacob's dream or in Hagar's distress, God seeks to
be known and to make Himself known. "O LORD," proclaims David, "for your
servant's sake and according to your own heart, you have done all this
greatness, in making known all these great things. There is none like
you, O LORD, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we
have heard with our ears" (1 Chronicles 17:19,20, ESV).

There is something vital in knowing that there is much that we do not
know. It keeps us grounded in reality. It keeps us looking to the one
who wills to be known. Says the LORD, "Call to me and I will answer you
and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know" (Jeremiah
33:3).

A.W. Tozer writes, "At the heart of the Christian message is God Himself
waiting for his redeemed Children to push in to conscious awareness of his
presence." When Job was confronted with the great thunder of 62 questions
from God about the foundations of the world and the inner workings of
life, Job realized that he had spoken out of turn. Confronting the
reality of all that he did not know brought Job to a deeper certainty of
God. "My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you" (Job 42:5).
Might our lives echo a similar cry. Might our eyes see the one who sees
us.

"In the Midst of Smoke and Talk"
Danielle DuRant

"There are two tragedies in life," noted Oscar Wilde. "One is not getting
what you want. The other is getting it." Indeed. We get what we
want, and we are left longing for more, for it never seems to satisfy,
does it?

What is it we want? Transcendence. As mere humans, we long to
connect to something beyond ourselves, or escape our boredom and pain.
And in this search, the metaphor of the market often serves as the
exclusive image for guiding our thinking. "All paths to transcendence are
equally valuable," we are told, and so any one will do, as long as it works
for you and doesn't do harm to others. One path may lead one to God;
another, to whatever provides escape and meaning.

Religious experience, then, is understood by many as a means of
self-fulfillment-what the individual gets out of it-not whether there is
"another" who is "outer" and "other" than ourselves. In this way,
religion is domesticated, trivialized, and simply co-opted for personal
and private use. It is what sociologist Os Guinness describes as a faith
that is "privately engaging but socially irrelevant."

Yet there is One who stands outside and above, proclaiming "I AM WHO I AM"
(Exodus 3:14). His voice disturbs us because He does not speak the
language of the market, nor for that matter, of this world. Rather, He
calls us to lay everything at His feet and to worship Him-and to worship
Him because He is who He is, Holy Other. This is the God we see in
the Scriptures, and it is the Christ we encounter in the Gospels.

In fact, God reveals himself to Moses as "I AM WHO I AM," and Jesus
reiterates this phrase seven times in the Gospel of John. "I am the bread
of life," he declares in John 6, and in John 8, "I am the light of the
world." At the end of Jesus' sermon in John 8, we read, "'I tell you the
truth,' Jesus answered, 'before Abraham was born, I am!'" Then John
comments, "At this, they picked up stones to stone him" (John 8:58-59).
Why did the people want to stone him? Because Jesus declared that he is
not only the fulfillment of all our hungers, but even more, he is the
fulfillment of all that is. He is the Eternal One, Truth
Incarnate.

Theologian David Wells comments:

"Christ is not an agitator. He offers no new, intense experiences. He
does not sell anything. He is, and that is all-like a flower on
the restaurant table in the midst of the smoke and the talk. This is not
what everybody else is promising today. In the advertisements. in the new
spiritual movements the message is clear-we have exactly what you have been
looking for! Here is the answer to all your questions! [.] This
simplification turns everyone into nothing more than a shallow consumer.
Christ is not for consumption but for worship."(1)

O, that may we lay everything at his feet and worship Him who is Holy
Other.

Verse of the Day

* * * Four important things to KNOW: #1) For ALL (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) have sinned & fall short of the glory of God. #2) For the wages of above (see #1) are DEATH (Hell, eternal separation from God, & damnation) but the Gift (free & at no charge to you) of God (Creator, Jehovah, & Trinity) is Eternal Life (Heaven) through (in union with) Jesus Christ (God, Lord, 2nd Person of The Trinity, Messiah, Prince of Peace & Savior of the World). #3) For God so greatly loved & dearly prized the world (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) that He even gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, that whosoever (anyone, anywhere, anytime - while still living) believes (trust in, relies on, clings to, depends completely on) Him shall have eternal (everlasting) life (heaven). #4) Jesus said: "I am THE WAY, THE TRUTH, & THE LIFE. No one (male/female - American, Muslim, Jew, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, Asian, Presbyterian, European, Baptist, Brazilian, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc. ) comes (arrives) to the Father (with GOD in Heaven) EXCEPT BY (through) ME (no other name). *** This wonderful loving GOD gives you the choice - - - (Rev. 3:20) {Please note that church membership, baptism, doing good things, etc. are not requirements for becoming a Christian - however they are great afterwards!!!} *** Jesus said, "Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction (Hell, damnation, eternal punishment), and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life (Heaven, eternal happiness, forever with God), and only a few find it.

D I S C L A I M E R If someone should ask if it's legal to download songs
found on various non-commercial sites, such as this one.

Well, I'm neither a lawyer nor a technician,
and I've begun to wonder if it was legal for
us to tape music off the radio back when
tape recorders first came into being.

And were we committing a crime when we recorded
a movie shown on TV with our VCRs? And was it
really legal to buy a dual-deck recorder for the
express purpose of duplicating cassettes?

My answer to all of the above is, "I don't know."

Nonetheless, here is a formal statement in
some kind of legalize that appears to apply
to this kind of file availability:
