Two atoms are walking down the street & they
run into each other. One says to the other,

"Are you all right?"

"No, I lost an electron!"

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah, I'm positive!"

Dear Howdy,

Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside a dog it's too
dark to read.

Groucho M.

Japanese machinery-maker Daihen Corp. is now turning out
robots that serve more as companion or entertainer than servant.
The company has had already had great success in
America with its most advanced model -- the Al Gore, Jr.

A man was giving his testimony at one of those old Salvation Army
open air street meetings. As he was testifying, a heckler in the
crowd yelled, "Why don't you shut up and sit down? You're just dreaming."

Immediately that heckler felt a tug on his coat. He looked down to
see a little girl, who said. "Sir, may I speak to you? That man who
is talking up there is my daddy. Daddy used to be a drunkard. He used
to spend all of the money he made on whiskey. My mother was very sad
and would cry most of the time. "Sometimes when my daddy came home,
he would hit my mother. I didn't have shoes or a nice dress to wear to school.
But look at my shoes. And see this pretty dress? My daddy bought these for me."
But the little girl wasn't through with that heckler yet. "See my mother
over there? She's the one with the bright smile on her face. She's
happy now. She sings even when she's doing the ironing."

Then the little girl said,
"Mister, if my daddy is dreaming, please don't wake him up."

Nothing New under the Sun
Another Failed Attempt to Explain God Away

January 25, 2006

For a long time now, secularists have been trying to come up with reasons why
people believe in God. If you take a strictly naturalistic view of the world,
after all, it can be pretty difficult to understand how anyone would put their
faith in an invisible supernatural being. And yet, generation after generation
continues to hold to do just that. It's a question that has puzzled and
fascinated some of the most prominent minds of our time.

Now there's an intriguing new explanation for religious faith. Paul Bloom, a
Yale professor of psychology and linguistics, argues in the ATLANTIC MONTHLY
that belief in God is a biological accident.

Basically, Bloom's theory goes like this: Human beings are naturally dualistic.
Studies show that from a very young age, we can tell the difference between the
physical world and the psychological world. That is, we understand that rocks
and trees do not have thoughts and feelings, but that humans do. Our brains use
one system to understand the physical world, and another to understand the
psychological world.

As Bloom sees it, "Both these systems are biological adaptations that give human
beings a badly needed head start in dealing with objects and people. But these
systems go awry in two important ways that are the foundations of religion.
First, we perceive the world of objects as essentially separate from the world
of minds, making it possible for us to envision soulless bodies and bodiless
souls." And Bloom continues, "This helps explain why we believe in gods and an
afterlife. Second, as we will see, our system of social understanding
overshoots, inferring goals and desires where none exist. This makes us animists
and creationists."

In other words, we humans look at inanimate objects and tend to see evidence of
design and purpose in them -- evidence that Bloom says just isn't there.
Essentially, we are using the wrong part of our brain to interpret them. And we
make the same mistake when we assume that human bodies have souls that live on
after death. Because we have powers of reasoning, thinking, and feeling, we
naturally tend to think of ourselves as something more than just bodies. But,
Bloom says, it is all the result of a mistaken way of thinking -- as I said, he
calls it a biological accident.

Well, all this may impress some scholars, but I think there are a few big holes
in his argument. For example, I would submit to Professor Bloom that even if
human brains have a tendency to infer design, that is not evidence that design
does not exist. Maybe we infer it because it is so. It would be a biological
accident only if you accept Bloom's premise that the universe is a closed system
with no possibility of supernatural intervention. And Bloom, like many
scientists, does not attempt to prove this very important point -- he just takes
it for granted, just like evolutionists do, which makes science hostage to their
philosophy.

So Bloom's scientific studies, carefully conducted as they seem to be, prove
only what he wants them to prove if one starts from a materialist point of view
-- the same materialist point of view that has tried and failed to disprove
religion for so many years. When it comes to tempting "new" theories to explain
away religion, it looks like there really is nothing new under the sun after
all.

Inside Out

Jill Carattini

Barbara Krensavage insists that clams are not a regular part of her diet.
Yet one snowy evening in December she found herself craving an old recipe,
and so brought home four dozen quahogs-a clam particularly abundant between
Cape Cod and New Jersey. Mr. Krensavage was in the midst of shucking the
shellfish for dinner when he discovered one that looked like it was dead.
It had a different color to it and he thought it was diseased. As he was
about to discard it, Mrs. Krensavage took a closer look.

It wasn't dead. In fact, inside the live clam was a rare and possibly
priceless, purple pearl. Experts estimate that roughly one in two million
quahog clams contains a gem-quality pearl like the one found by the
Krensavages. Due to the great rarity of the find, it has been difficult
to even place a value on it, though some have estimated the pearl to be
worth anywhere from thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The message Christ brought to the world was one that spoke openly of a
kingdom among us where, like this discovery of the Krensavages, all is not
as it may first appear. In a world that seems more marked by disease than
promise, there is hidden in this life a treasure worth selling all we have
to possess as our own. Where there seems a world of stagnant hope and
deteriorating vision, there is the promise of living water and the signs
of its presence. Where there is around us a world marked by the power of
death, there is yet somehow a life among us that was stronger than death
itself. Now we see as in a glass darkly, but for those who will see, the
kingdom Christ came to show us is here and is real, a pearl of great
price.

Yet even holding it, we may not always recognize its worth. On the Mount
of Transfiguration, Jesus stood with Peter, James, and John-three men who
left lives behind to sit and learn at his feet-and there he was
transfigured before them. These men knew Jesus better than any other.
They were with him constantly, eating, sleeping, and learning; and they
were terrified in his presence on the mountain. All three fell facedown
on the ground, until Jesus came and touched them. As commentator
Frederick Bruner describes what was happening on that mountain, "What
Jesus was within was once made visible without."(1)

It is at times more disturbing to see clearly than it is to see dimly. To
see Christ as he really is, the one whom men could not kill and death could
not touch because he was too alive, is to see more than we can
handle as we currently are. In the Old Testament, the face of God was
readily spoken of as too much for a man to see and yet live. Rabbinic
reflection taught that Adam and Eve had lost the radiance of their faces
in their fall to sin, and that the Messiah would reestablish this radiance
once more. Here as the face of Christ "became like the sun," it portrayed
vividly the glory of God and the beginnings of his restoration of
radiance. It was a preview of the heavenly transfiguration awaiting
believers in the person of Christ, when the life of the Son within us will
be made visible without. For the disciples, the sound of God's voice and
the reality of the Son were too much to behold standing.

Perhaps it is telling that the clam which held the pearl the Krensavages
now treasure was the one that had most the outward appearance of death.
Notes C.S. Lewis, "[I]t is, I think, a gross exaggeration to picture the
saving of a soul as being, normally, at all like the development from seed
to flower. The very words, repentance, regeneration, the New Man, suggest
something very different."(2) We cannot lay our hands on the thought that
we are made in the image of God and being presently formed in the Person of
Christ without laying down our entire lives before Him, giving everything
we have, being turned inside out, that we might one day stand in his
glory. For the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine
pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold
everything he had and bought it.

Verse of the Day

* * * Four important things to KNOW: #1) For ALL (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) have sinned & fall short of the glory of God. #2) For the wages of above (see #1) are DEATH (Hell, eternal separation from God, & damnation) but the Gift (free & at no charge to you) of God (Creator, Jehovah, & Trinity) is Eternal Life (Heaven) through (in union with) Jesus Christ (God, Lord, 2nd Person of The Trinity, Messiah, Prince of Peace & Savior of the World). #3) For God so greatly loved & dearly prized the world (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) that He even gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, that whosoever (anyone, anywhere, anytime - while still living) believes (trust in, relies on, clings to, depends completely on) Him shall have eternal (everlasting) life (heaven). #4) Jesus said: "I am THE WAY, THE TRUTH, & THE LIFE. No one (male/female - American, Muslim, Jew, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, Asian, Presbyterian, European, Baptist, Brazilian, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc. ) comes (arrives) to the Father (with GOD in Heaven) EXCEPT BY (through) ME (no other name). *** This wonderful loving GOD gives you the choice - - - (Rev. 3:20) {Please note that church membership, baptism, doing good things, etc. are not requirements for becoming a Christian - however they are great afterwards!!!} *** Jesus said, "Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction (Hell, damnation, eternal punishment), and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life (Heaven, eternal happiness, forever with God), and only a few find it.

D I S C L A I M E R If someone should ask if it's legal to download songs
found on various non-commercial sites, such as this one.

Well, I'm neither a lawyer nor a technician,
and I've begun to wonder if it was legal for
us to tape music off the radio back when
tape recorders first came into being.

And were we committing a crime when we recorded
a movie shown on TV with our VCRs? And was it
really legal to buy a dual-deck recorder for the
express purpose of duplicating cassettes?

My answer to all of the above is, "I don't know."

Nonetheless, here is a formal statement in
some kind of legalize that appears to apply
to this kind of file availability:
