Redeemed by Art? : The Deceitful Heart
by Charles Colson

A man in Austria named Jack Unterwegers murdered a
woman in 1976 and was sentenced to life in prison.
While there, he made good use of the library and
began to write. In time he became a best-selling
author, surprising the public with his compelling
insights into the world of crime.

He portrayed himself as a victim, the abandoned child
of a prostitute, raised in foster homes where he was
abused. He became a media darling, and soon the
public demanded his release. So after 15 years, the
gates were flung open and, at age 40, Jack
Unterwegers was a free man.

When he assured the media he would never spend
another day in prison, they declared him "Redeemed by Art!"

Almost immediately a wave of murders of prostitutes
began. As a writer with expert knowledge of the
subject, Unterwegers was hired by a German magazine
to cover the story. A retired police officer read
about the case and notified authorities that the
killer was using the same methods as a man he had
sent to prison years earlier -- the same Jack Unterwegers.

While searching the writer's apartment, police found
receipts from a trip to America, and L.A. police had
three murders that fit Unterwegers' M.O. exactly. Then
the FBI got involved. FBI profilers said all
the murders were the work of one man.

Airline tickets and charge records revealed that
Unterwegers had been in each location at the time of
the murders. But the media refused to believe it.
Unterwegers was covering the case, they said. He had
a right to be there. There was just one problem: The
writer had arrived before the murders took place.

Crowds eagerly sought Unterwegers' company, and the
charmer held court at different clubs every night.
But the evidence became conclusive: Unterwegers had
killed 12 women. He was charged, tried,
convicted, and sentenced to life in prison.

But, true to his word, he never spent another day in
jail -- he killed himself before the sentence was
carried out. Art had not redeemed him, after all.

Indeed, art has no power to redeem. Yes, literature
and art can uplift the spirit, that's true. But over
the years, many have been tricked into believing that
art can also transform the heart.

The New York literati glorified Jack Abbott, who wrote
a powerful book about prison, In the Belly of the Beast.
Media pressure got him out of prison. He was the toast
of the town, then he killed again.

My good friend Bill Buckley was misled by the writings
of convicted murderer Edgar Smith in
the late sixties. He too returned to crime.

Can a guilty man be redeemed? Absolutely. It happens
everyday, but not by art -- no matter what the
literary world may believe. No one will ever be
redeemed by art or social engineering or charity or
good works, or sitting in a church pew, for that matter.

The real answer is nowhere more clearly put than in
Scripture, which says: "if anyone is in Christ, he is
a new creation." And that's the greatest artwork of all.

When I was growing up in Argentina, God's commandments--especially
the Ten Commandments--were taught in such a legalistic way that I
avoided any serious study of them until after I had finished my
graduate level biblical studies in the United States. I discovered
then how little has ever been written about them.

Our sinful nature causes us to corrupt that which is beautiful.
We turn God's moral law, which the apostle Paul called "holy,
righteous and good" (Romans 7:12), into oppressive legalism.
Perhaps that's why we frown at the mere mention of the Ten Commandments.

"They remind me of my grandmother, who had a fit if I ever wanted
to play outside on Sundays," some will admit.

"Thinking of the commandments reminds me of my father, who
refused to read the Sunday newspaper."

The words of God should not elicit such reactions. Let's return
to God's moral law and shake off the chains of sincere but sinful
human beings who have twisted the beauty of God's commandments.

When the Lord gave Israel the Ten Commandments, He said, "Listen,
O Israel! I brought you out of bondage, not to create another
bondage for you, but to liberate you. And if you remain within
the boundaries I am about to give you, then you will be free.
You'll have plenty of room to maneuver. So enjoy all that I have given you."

God's statement includes a warning: "As long as you stay within
the fence, you will be free, but once you try to stretch the
boundaries or jump over the fence, you will be in bondage once again."

I am convinced this is the way God intends us to view His
commandments. The apostle John reminds us, "His commands are not
burdensome" (1 John 5:3). They are life!

Now obviously we are not to try to live up to the Ten
Commandments for our salvation. We are all sinners (Romans 3:23)
in need of a Savior, Jesus Christ (Romans 5:8). Both the Bible
and experience teach us we couldn't keep the Ten Commandments
perfectly even if we tried (Romans 7:1-8:4).

The purpose of God's commandments is not to provide salvation but
to lay a foundation for us--a foundation on which to build a life
of love and obedience as God's servants.

Spend some time meditating on God's commandments. Start with the
Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:1-17. As you study and pray, answer
these questions. First, what does each commandment reveal about
the character of God? Second, what does each commandment liberate
me from? Third, how does each commandment protect me? Finally,
if love is the fulfillment of the law (Galatians 5:14), then what
does each of the commandments reveal about love?

I believe once you answer these four questions, you will never
look at God's commandments with a negative attitude again. As you
look at them with a new perspective, I think you will uncover at
least four principles that will enhance your understanding of our
infinitely wise and loving heavenly Father.

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity
in the hearts of me: yet they cannot fathom what God has done from
beginning to end." - Ecclesiastes 3

"We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from
God, that we may understand what God has freely given us." - I Corinthians 2

Trust in yourself and you are doomed to disappointment;
trust in money and you may have it taken from you;
but trust in God, and you are never to be confounded in
time or eternity. - D.L. Moody

The late comedian Flip Wilson used to get laughs
when, by way of explaining his misdeeds, he would say "the Devil made me do it!"

Well, unfortunately, our culture no longer believes
in the Devil, so it has to look elsewhere to find
explanations for the things men do. Increasingly,
evolution has emerged as the explanation of choice--
but it's an explanation that leaves a lot to be desired.

Psychologists, biologists and anthropologists have
all taken to explaining human behavior in purely
Darwinian terms. In the past few years, scientists
have argued that behavior such as jealousy,
altruism, and even infanticide, have their origins in
our ancestors' struggle to survive and pass on their genes.

The newest addition to the list is rape. In their
book, A Natural History of Rape, to be published this
week, Randy Thornhill and Craig T. Palmer, argue that
rape is "natural." That is, it occurs in nature and
can be explained in biological terms.

The authors reject the view, best represented by
Susan Brownmiller's 1975 book, Against Our Will, that
rape is "an act of aggression, designed to intimidate women."

Instead, they contend that rape has its origins in
what could be called the "Darwinist imperative," to
reproduce and pass on one's genes.

According to the authors, rape is what they call "an
adaptive reproductive strategy." In other words,
males resort to rape when all other efforts to
attract a mate fail. They cite examples of rape
among animals and point to the fact that most rape
victims are of child-bearing age. They conclude that
rape must be motivated, however unconsciously, by the desire to impregnate.

Not surprisingly, feminists are in an uproar. Thornhill
has been the object of protests wherever he speaks.
And in the latest issue of Time magazine, feminist writer
Barbara Ehrenreich takes the pair to task.

It's mildly amusing, I must say, to watch the feminists
in their uproar. Whether they realize it or not, they're
in a logical bind. Most are avowed evolutionists, and
yet here evolution is being used to justify the
exploitation of women. They are impaled on the sword of their own worldview.

The truth is that the whole evolutionist idea that we
are manipulated by our genes is nonsense. Evolution
can't explain most human behavior, especially those
traits that Lincoln called "the better angels of our
nature," like altruism and mercy.

No, if you really want to understand what makes us
tick, the only sensible answer resides in a Christian
worldview. As I wrote in my recent book, How Now
Shall We Live, this worldview centers on three key
ideas: creation, fall, and redemption.

Since we are made in the image of God, we are
capable of acts like kindness and mercy, which
reflect the nature of God. Since we are also fallen,
we are also capable of great brutality, such as rape.

Books like A Natural History of Rape purport to
explain reality with reference to the biblical
worldview. But, they end up demonstrating that only
the biblical worldview offers an explanation of
reality that makes sense - and that's a message our neighbors need to hear.

Because, in the end, "evolution made me do it," not
only isn't as funny as Wilson's line, it's also not true.
Chuck Colson

Verse of the Day

* * * Four important things to KNOW: #1) For ALL (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) have sinned & fall short of the glory of God. #2) For the wages of above (see #1) are DEATH (Hell, eternal separation from God, & damnation) but the Gift (free & at no charge to you) of God (Creator, Jehovah, & Trinity) is Eternal Life (Heaven) through (in union with) Jesus Christ (God, Lord, 2nd Person of The Trinity, Messiah, Prince of Peace & Savior of the World). #3) For God so greatly loved & dearly prized the world (Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhist, Asians, Presbyterians, Europeans, Baptist, Brazilians, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc.) that He even gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, that whosoever (anyone, anywhere, anytime - while still living) believes (trust in, relies on, clings to, depends completely on) Him shall have eternal (everlasting) life (heaven). #4) Jesus said: "I am THE WAY, THE TRUTH, & THE LIFE. No one (male/female - American, Muslim, Jew, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, Asian, Presbyterian, European, Baptist, Brazilian, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc. ) comes (arrives) to the Father (with GOD in Heaven) EXCEPT BY (through) ME (no other name). *** This wonderful loving GOD gives you the choice - - - (Rev. 3:20) {Please note that church membership, baptism, doing good things, etc. are not requirements for becoming a Christian - however they are great afterwards!!!} *** Jesus said, "Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction (Hell, damnation, eternal punishment), and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life (Heaven, eternal happiness, forever with God), and only a few find it.

D I S C L A I M E R If someone should ask if it's legal to download songs
found on various non-commercial sites, such as this one.

Well, I'm neither a lawyer nor a technician,
and I've begun to wonder if it was legal for
us to tape music off the radio back when
tape recorders first came into being.

And were we committing a crime when we recorded
a movie shown on TV with our VCRs? And was it
really legal to buy a dual-deck recorder for the
express purpose of duplicating cassettes?

My answer to all of the above is, "I don't know."

Nonetheless, here is a formal statement in
some kind of legalize that appears to apply
to this kind of file availability:
