That's Not Funny

http://outsidethebeltway.com/fotos/franceriots2.gif

Over the last ten days, the press has been full of stories about violent
Muslim protests against cartoons published in Danish papers, caricaturing
Muhammad. Reuters, in a story this week, took the conventional line: that
the cartoons had created a "crisis" between Europe and the Islamic world.

Well, Reuters and the rest of the press are right about there being a
crisis, but wrong about when it started and what caused it.

Magnificent Obsession
Jill Carattini

In a 1969 issue of Psychology Today, a group of scholars discussed
the emergence of a generation of inward-moving, self-reflecting, young men
and women. Most agreed the prospects of such a generation were both
promising and ominous-promising because discovery of self can be a step
toward honesty and authenticity, producing a society better equipped in
matters of self and community. But prospects of the inward generation
were also ominous in the eyes of these sociologists because of the present
mood and form of the inwardness they were observing. It was an inward move
toward self that seemed "unbridled by any social norm or tradition and
almost void of notions for exercise of responsibility toward others."
According to their data, the inwardness that was being embraced was
leading more to a form of self-centered privatism than it was to depth and
wholeness of self. Research portrayed men and women more interested in
material comfort and immediate gratification of personal interests than in
new realities of a deeper self that could mold and transform society.

The pull toward inward self-examination is clearly a trend still among us.
Spirituality and self-reflection are topics that continue to reach
bestseller lists, while the pursuits of materialism and sensuality
continue to lure us into self-absorption with the promise of
self-fulfillment. It is still ominous to perceive this compulsion toward
inwardness and self. Likewise, it is still promising.

The current multi-generational tendency toward self-reflection can lead to
multi-generational discoveries of the hope of authenticity and the reality
of the unseen. But there is a great difference between knowing our
bellies and their constant pangs of appetite and knowing our
selves. Within the pursuit of knowing the self, there is a choice
to tread water safely or to delve into hard questions and risk drowning in
order to know what it means to be human, why we pursue and believe in
self-fulfillment, what it means that we long to know the point of a
lifetime and the reason we live it. Speaking of this uniquely human
enterprise, James Loder writes, "In its bewildered, blundering,
brilliance, [the human spirit] cries out for wisdom to an 'unknown God.'
But it is the personal Author of the universe whose Spirit alone can set
the human spirit free from its proclivity to self-inflation,
self-doubt, self-absorption, and self-destruction, and free for its
'magnificent obsession'. to know the mind of God." Authentic inwardness
always moves the spirit outward.

But it is not easy. Truly delving inward into the human self is messy,
unpredictable, and unsafe. We find ourselves as Paul explained with
confusion, "I don't understand myself at all, for I really want to do what
is right, but I don't do it. Instead, I do the very thing I hate" (Romans
7:15, NLT). But in plunging into the question of what it means to be
human, what it means to actually live, and what it accurately looks like
to fall short, we find something other than condemnation, someone other
than the self for whom we were looking. For the brave human spirit in
such a posture, the words of Carlo Carretto ring true, "My poor human
personality has finally found the 'Other' with whom it may speak. The
'Other' is God in His being, His truth, His love. The passage to faith is
radical, absolute; only God is capable of stating it, carrying it through,
controlling it."

The pull of the human self inward can be the means with which the Father
shows us his own image. In this journey, the words of Isaiah and the
promise of God are our own: "I will give you the treasures of darkness,
riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD,
the God of Israel, who summons you by name" (Isaiah 45:3). Where we are
driven to mine with integrity the dark caverns of self, Christ appears
with light and reveals what it means to be human. I am the way, the
truth, and the life.

The Bedroom Police
'Non-Platonic' Policies

"University of Florida employees have to pledge that they're having sex with their domestic partners before qualifying for benefits under a new health care plan at the university."

That may sound like a joke to you—maybe something from the satirical website "The Onion." But as a matter of fact, that sentence is straight from an actual news story in the Gainesville Sun.

The paper explains, "In addition to declaring financial obligations, prospective enrollees must 'have been in a non-platonic relationship for the preceding 12 months.'" However, "[University of Florida official Kyle] Cavanaugh said he had no plans to personally enforce the sex pledge"—that's comforting. "The 'non-platonic' clause is 'increasingly standard' in domestic partnership plans, Cavanaugh said. The clause is one of several methods used to legally ensure that an employer is only obligated to cover employees in a committed relationship, not longtime roommates."

The more you read, the more bizarre the whole business gets. So bizarre, in fact, that the Sun's article created an uproar in the community. The university was finally forced to remove the requirement. But the fact that they even tried it should really come as no surprise.

You see, one of the dangers of granting marriage benefits to domestic partners is how easily that privilege gets abused. How do you determine whether two people living together are really domestic partners? What if they are simply two friends who are living in the same house to get benefits? And once this kind of abuse gets started, what's to prevent more and more people from trying it? It's a recipe for financial disaster for the companies that are giving the benefits. And some of them are starting to realize it. Hence, the "non-platonic clause."

But then we get to the practical side of things: How on earth are officials supposed to make sure this pledge is being kept? Hence, the non-enforcement and eventual removal of the non-platonic clause.

But it's the height of irony. For years, social conservatives have been vilified for supposedly wanting to be "bedroom police." But now it's the social liberals who are in danger of becoming bedroom police—but such ineffective ones that they're more like Keystone Kops. They tried to create rules they had no way of enforcing, about something they had no control over.

The funny thing is, there's already a system in place to ensure that benefits go to truly committed couples who have a lifetime interest in one another's welfare. It's called marriage. Those who argued that it was too restrictive to give benefits only to married couples are now finding that it's the only way that really works.

It's just more evidence that the Christian view of love and marriage makes sense on every level, including the practical. You can set marriage apart and honor it as an institution created by God for the benefit of couples, children, and society. Or you can call it just one of many equivalent living arrangements—and end up policing people's bedrooms. Reality has a way of reinforcing the Christian worldview, whether we like it or not. And it makes all our wonderful utopian schemes look really silly.

The global reaction to the uproar over the "12 Satanic Cartoons" demonstrates a growing Western embrace of the mentality of Islamic "dhimmitude" subtly disguised as political correctness.

Under Islam, a "dhimmi" is a non-Muslim living in conquered Muslim lands. "Dhimmis" are permitted limited freedom of religion, provided there is no conflict with Islamic laws governing such things as religious symbols and images. However, a dhimmi has virtually no rights in actual practice. The word of one "offended Muslim" can send a dhimmi to death.

Historically, Jews living as dhimmis in Muslim countries have been subjected to daily humiliations that reduced life to a perilous uncertainty. They are required to pay a very high tax called the "jizra" for the "privilege of living among Muslims."

This latest example of Muslim intolerance and violence over any hint of insult to their religion displays clearly for all to see that their core beliefs inspire hatred and violence.

The behavior of the vast majority of Muslims puts the lie to "the political correct image of Islam as inherently peaceful and tolerant." Yet, the continuing advance of this patently false idea by Western leaders, despite the total lack of evidence to support it, is an admission that we're all dhimmis now.

It is evidence that we've voluntarily submitted most of our culture to "Islamic dhimmitude," by censoring those who dare to point out the inherent contradictions evident in the continually repeated myth that Islam is basically tolerant and peaceful. It is a myth driven by fear of Muslim violence and terrorism.

A Christian fundamentalist is one who adheres to the fundamentals of Christianity. A Jewish fundamentalist is one who adheres to the fundamentals of Judaism. There is no other logical understanding of the terms.

If an Islamic fundamentalist is one who adheres to the fundamentals of Islam, then a "moderate" Islamic majority means a majority of Muslims reject Islam's fundamental teachings. This is so self-evidently circular that it makes one dizzy to contemplate.

There was a scene in the old '60's series "Star Trek" in which an evil android was defeated by Mr. Spock's circular logic. Mr. Spock told the android that he (Mr. Spock) was lying when he said he was lying. Sorting it all out made the android's head explode.

Figuring out how a religion's fundamentals can inspire terror while arguing it is fundamentally "peaceful and tolerant" makes me feel like that android.

Denmark submitted to Islam when it apologized on behalf of its press for publishing cartoons that violated Islamic law. Some members of the European press establishment, unaware of the rules of dhimmitude, republished the cartoons as an exercise of journalism's religious defense of freedom of the press. Soon, their various national leaders also submitted to Islamic dhimmitude, apologizing to Islam on behalf of their citizens for violating Islamic religious prohibitions.

Former president Clinton, speaking from Qatar, called the publication of the cartoons "appalling" and "outrageous." In true dhimmi fashion, his outrage was reserved for the cartoonists, not the raging sea of formerly "moderate Islamists" calling for their execution.

The imam at the Islamic Center in Brussels denounced the cartoons. "Where are the human-rights organizations? Why are they silent?" he demanded. And the Muslim World League called on U.N. Secretary Kofi Annan to implement international laws against insolence of religions.

Seventeen foreign ministers from the Arabian League demanded the editors responsible for publishing the cartoons to be "punished."

Iranian President Ahmadinajad, not to be out done, announced that the cartoonists should be killed.

As for the cartoonists themselves? They are reportedly all in hiding, in fear for their lives. As Daniel Pipes accurately noted in a recent column, "the deeper issue here, however, is not Muslim hypocrisy, but Islamic supremacism." To back up his point, Pipes quoted Flemming Rose, the Danish editor who published the cartoons: "[I]f I, as a non-Muslim, should submit to their taboos ... they're asking for my submission." Indeed, Islam has not only demanded submission, they've gotten it.

Said U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbor, "I find alarming any behaviors that disregard the beliefs of others. This kind of thing is unacceptable." (Then she announced an investigation into racism and Islamophobia. Harrumphhh!)

In the United States, the mainstream media, which have already allied themselves with the political dhimmis on the left, knew better. With the exception of CNN – which pixelated the images the first time (suppressing them altogether thereafter) – the U.S. mainstream media devoted hours of coverage to the story without daring to show the Satanic Cartoons themselves.

Dhimmis know their place.

Dear Howdy,

Q: Why aren't angry Muslims in the United States torching buildings owned by Danes, Norwegians, French, Spanish and other Cartoon Infidels whose newspapers have printed cartoons, first published in Denmark, bearing the likeness of the Prophet Muhammad?

A: Because American Muslims have better things to do.

Here lies an important fact, too little mentioned or explored. The recent outburst of righteous arson in the Muslim world has been described as a warning to the West, a sign that radical Islam has become a force of considerable sweep and power, an indicator that terrorists have mastered propaganda techniques capable of sending raging hordes into the streets in a matter of minutes.

But another explanation fits the facts. The mayhem has centered in four nations: Afghanistan, Lebanon, Pakistan and Syria. Each has a double-digit unemployment rate, and poverty rates between 32 percent and 52 percent. All have large pools of idle men who can show up for a mob activity at a moment's notice. In short, they're havens for losers, uniquely equipped to stage such spectacles.

Even so, it took Danish Imam Abu Laban and a handful of other inciters five months to foment the riots. Laban began touring the Middle East last fall, bearing a dozen cartoons — many of which were sloppy and amateurish — first published in a Danish paper. They contained unflattering depictions of Muhammad.

Nobody cared.

So then Laban and company got creative. First, they grabbed a photograph taken at a French hog-calling contest, and claimed the fellow wearing a plastic snout and ears actually was posing as a porcine Prophet. They tossed in another bad drawing of a character saying, "I'm a pedophile," along with a photo-shopped tableau of a dog having its way with a Muslim bent in prayer.

Then they put together a list of fake charges against the dastardly Danes. They accused Danish papers of publishing 120 anti-Muslim cartoons and photos. They warned Danes were planning a movie that mocked Muhammad. They charged the Danish government with burning, desecrating and banning the Quran, prohibiting the construction of mosques and outlawing Islam.

It took a lot of effort — aided and abetted by Syria, Iran and al Jazeera — but the lie-mongering finally worked. Mobs in Lebanon and Syria set fire to Danish embassies. Riots broke out elsewhere, claiming more than a dozen lives. Iran organized an international boycott of Denmark and renamed Danish pastries, "Muhammad pastries."

The ringleader, Abu Laban, is affiliated with the Egyptian terror group the Islamic Brotherhood. He told Western reporters he never desired to see Denmark hurt, but then crowed in Arabic to al Jazeera that the boycott was working!

Yet, the central "crime" — the mere depiction of Muhammad — is neither a crime nor an anomaly. It has been commonplace in parts of the Muslim world for centuries. Indeed, a prominent Egyptian newspaper published the offending cartoons a week after their original appearance in Denmark. Nobody uttered of word of complaint at the time.

The episode reveals the weakness of hotheads who pursue mayhem in the name of Islam. Laban's quest to conjure fire took months to produce results and managed mainly to make the rioters look foolish or, in selected cases, dead.

An enterprising shopkeep in Gaza told Reuters that he saw an opportunity for commercial geld the instant the story broke. He bought Danish flags from a Taiwanese vendor and sold them at a premium. He knew locals would want pennants to burn. The man counted on his neighbors to behave like emotional fools.

Equally telling has been the weakness of those who always capitulate pre-emptively when hotheads kvetch. Jordan fired and arrested two newspaper editors for publishing a couple of the controversial cartoons. A Dubai university fired American-born Professor Claudia Keyboars for showing students what the fuss was about. Virtually every newspaper in the United States declined to publish the cartoons for fear of giving "offense."

Abu Laban is to Islam what David Duke is to Christianity: a bigoted joke. He appeals to the ignorant and dispossessed, and mistakes pointless rage for righteous passion.

And yet, his moment of "glory" teaches valuable lessons. Guys like him fail utterly in places where people have hope and prospects — like the United States.

Furthermore, the most reliable vaccine against idiotic rage is faith — the soulful conviction that the Creator is not the Destroyer; that religion directs us not toward the torch, but toward charity; and that G-d is not petty, vain, small-minded or humorless. He leaves that to the likes of Abu Laban.

Dear Howdy,

The past two Sundays I have had the opportunity to listen to a portion of a lesson concerning Islam by Avi Lipkin. Mr. Lipkin is an American born Israeli. He moved to Israel about 36 years ago and married an Egyptian Jewess. He previously worked with the Knesset and his wife works as a media watch person concerning the Arab stations. Be that as it may, he refers to Islam not as a religion but rather a Psychosis. The more I read of things such as this the more I become convinced that he has it right. He has a web site www.vicmord.com His name is actually Dennis Avi Lipkin alias Victor Mordecai in Jerusalem. He has written several books and has a number of CD's, DVD's and Video's available. He is quite a speaker and should you have the chance, you should go and see him. He is on news stations from time to time also and believe me, he is NOT Politically Correct!!

All of a sudden offensive toons no longer "halal" [Excerpts]

There is a strong case for saying that the Danish cartoons of Mohammed,
which have caused so much uproar, are fair comment. Certainly those who
haven't seen them can rest assured that they are relatively tame in
comparison with many cartoons on other subjects which regularly appear in
the European press. Even so, non-Muslims might have more sympathy with
Muslims who find them offensive, if it weren't for the astonishing double
standards and hypocrisy of the Muslim world when it comes to accepting and
applauding truly vicious slanders against Jews, and to a lesser extent
Christians.

The arguments from Muslims -- though not the fanatical, violent manner of
many of their protests -- would no doubt be taken more seriously if they had
also objected to the depiction on Syrian television of rabbis as cannibals.
Or if last Saturday, Britain's Muslim Weekly had not published a caricature
of a hooked-nose Ehud Olmert.

Or if last Friday, "Valley of the Wolves," the most expensive movie ever
made in Turkey, had not opened to great local acclaim. In the film, American
soldiers in Iraq crash a wedding and pump a little boy full of lead in front
of his mother. They kill dozens of innocent people with random machine
gun-fire, shoot the groom in the head, and drag those left alive to prison,
where a Jewish doctor cuts out their organs, and sells them to rich people
in New York, London and Tel Aviv.

Or if a Belgian and Dutch Muslim group hadn't last week posted on its
website pictures of Anne Frank in bed with Hitler. Or if the mere display of
a cross or a Star of David in Saudi Arabia wasn't illegal.

And when it comes to newspaper cartoons -- the subject of the present unrest
-- Muslim countries are world leaders in stirring up hate, without a peep of
protest elsewhere, let alone the torching of buildings, threats to behead
European tourists, and the burning of the Danish flag (which incidentally
bears a Christian symbol, the cross). So much for religious respect.

Arabic Jew-baiting is not -- as Israel's enemies in the West often try to
argue -- limited to political attacks on Zionism. They are directed against
Jews in general, and are as loathsome and dehumanizing as those produced
under the Nazis.

We might expect such demonic images from a country led by a Holocaust-denier
like Iran, or a rogue regime like Syria. But these vile images are to be
found in the media of supposedly moderate, pro-Western states like Jordan,
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and Egypt.

Al-Watan (Oman) has run Nazi-type caricatures of Jews with hooked noses and
hunched backs, not wearing shoes, and sweating profusely.

Akhbar Al-Khalij (Bahrain) has shown anti-Semitic caricatures of
black-hatted Jews spitting and sweating as they manipulate America to do
their bidding.

Al Ahram, one of Egypt's leading dailies, has published cartoons of Jews
laughing while they drink blood.

The official cartoonist of the Palestinian Authority has portrayed Jews in
the form of snakes, a historic motif of medieval European anti-Semitism. The
PA website has posted cartoons repeating the ancient blood libel that Jews
murder non-Jewish children.

Some of the cartoons don't just resemble those published by the Nazis. They
are literally copied from Nazi originals. For instance, a cartoon from Arab
News (an English-language Saudi daily regarded as one of the more moderate
publications in the Arab world), depicts rats wearing Stars of David and
skullcaps, scurrying backwards and forwards through holes in the wall of a
building called "Palestine House." The imagery used is almost identical to a
well-known scene from the Nazi film "Jew Suess" -- a scene in which Jews are
depicted as vermin to be eradicated by mass extermination.

To mark the UN designation of January 27 as Holocaust memorial day, the
cartoonist for Al-Yawm (Saudi Arabia) superimposed the Nazi swastika on the
Star of David.

With demonstrators on the streets of London last Friday chanting in unison
"Europe you will pay, your 9/11 is on its way" and holding signs reading
"Behead those who insult Islam," and "Prepare for the REAL Holocaust," it is
perhaps not surprising that weak spirits in the West are cowed
(http://www.jewishworldreview.com/0206/gross_toons.php3?printer_friendly).

One of the problems we have is that we (the west) are dependent upon Arab oil. People in the country anyway cannot see beyond their noses and allow drilling in the Alaskan Wildlife Preserve. This would be a help in getting us anyway out of the predicament. I read a book once where the US went to war with and conquered Saudi Arabia. We then sold the oil dirt cheap. Sounds good but we have to many greedy people to allow that. During the Clinton years, the theme was 'It's the Economy Stupid'. This thinking has caused us to allow the Arabs to get a terrific foothold in this nation. They buy up stocks, bonds, property and even schools. As a result, they have this grip on us as well as Europe. That needs to be broken even if it means reducing our style of living. To do that of course would require certain political figures to wise up. I am afraid they will be dead before that happens.

No one (male/female - American, Muslim, Jew, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, Asian, Presbyterian, European, Baptist, Brazilian, Mormons, Methodist, French, etc. ) comes (arrives) to the Father (with GOD in Heaven) EXCEPT BY (through) ME (no other name). *** This wonderful loving GOD gives you the choice - - - (Rev. 3:20) {Please note that church membership, baptism, doing good things, etc. are not requirements for becoming a Christian - however they are great afterwards!!!} *** Jesus said, "Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction (Hell, damnation, eternal punishment), and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life (Heaven, eternal happiness, forever with God), and only a few find it.

D I S C L A I M E R If someone should ask if it's legal to download songs
found on various non-commercial sites, such as this one.

Well, I'm neither a lawyer nor a technician,
and I've begun to wonder if it was legal for
us to tape music off the radio back when
tape recorders first came into being.

And were we committing a crime when we recorded
a movie shown on TV with our VCRs? And was it
really legal to buy a dual-deck recorder for the
express purpose of duplicating cassettes?

My answer to all of the above is, "I don't know."

Nonetheless, here is a formal statement in
some kind of legalize that appears to apply
to this kind of file availability:
